Today has been a pretty boring day, both eats-wise and life-wise. I started to write my regular daily blog and realized my heart just wasn't in it, so I decided to do something a little bit more fun: show pictures of my apartment!
As soon as I got a job in Nashville I immediately started hunting for the "perfect" apartment. I knew a few things: I wanted to stay in East Nashville, I wanted to live either in a house, a duplex or similar property with a small number of tenants (no giant apartment complexes) and I wanted something with character. There were also a lot of little requirements, like hardwood floors, a washer and dryer in unit, central heat and air and some sort of outdoor living area, but those were more flexible. After looking at a lot of dumps and things that just weren't right, I answered a random craigslist ad and found "the one."
My unit is the upstairs of a house built in the 1930's that was recently completely renovated. My downstairs neighbors and I are actually the first tenants to live here post-renovation (and they weren't even done with the apartment when I signed the lease -- there was a giant hole in the kitchen floor). It's tiny and has no storage, but I absolutely love it. I've never had a place all of my own, so I think most of my love is of the "first apartment that's all MINE" variety. Still, the place is cute, despite my lack of decorating know-how and money to complete the task. (You'll notice a distinct lack of "extras" like pictures on the wall and knick-knacks.)
Check it out!
This is my living room/study area, which is what you see when you first walk in the door. I took this picture from my front doorway. (I apologize for the grainy pictures. I took them a few weeks ago and none came out very well.)
This is my couch, a.k.a. where I spend 80% of my time at home. This is also taken from my doorway. You can see the hallway that leads to my room/the rest of the apartment.
This is my study/office area.
The view from the study into the living room. My tiny couch looks funny from this angle.
Reverse view of my front door.
My kitchen! It's very long and narrow. Taking this picture I am standing where the giant hole used to be, where a staircase led up from the first floor. Sometimes when you step on it the floor is a bit "bouncy" and it freaks me out.
At least 50% of the photos I post here are taken on that butcher block island. ;)
And now, my bathroom. One of the weird quirks about this apartment is you have to go into my bedroom in order to get to the bathroom. This is fine, until you have overnight company and then it gets awkward. When my Dad was visiting he was sleeping in my room (and me on an air mattress in the living room) and I waited at least an hour one morning before I could go to the bathroom! It was torture.
Tiny, but it does the trick. The shower is surprisingly roomy for such a small space.
Note the too-short shower curtain. I decided to wash the curtain and it shrunk a good three inches. Very annoying, considering it was fairly expensive.
My shower also features the only north-facing (and biggest and nicest) window in the house.
Too bad I can't ever really keep the blinds open!
My bedroom:
Please don't mind the giant pile of clothing on the dresser. I'm out of hangers.
The bedroom area also features another one of the "quirks" of my place. You see, technically my apartment is listed as a two bedroom. The second bedroom? Is directly connected to the main bedroom, has no separate entrance and NO DOOR. A doorway, but no door. Currently, this room is serving as my nothing room. Witness the nothing!
Eventually I want to get a pull-out couch or futon guests can sleep on when they visit. I still haven't figured out if that is going to be weird considering the strange bathroom situation, but hopefully the only people who visit will be family and very, very close friends. ;)
One nuisance of my apartment is the storage situation. There is only one closet in the entire place, and it's TINY.
Um, please don't mind the ugly bras hanging on the door. Oops.
Since the space is so tiny, I got myself one of these.
I've been looking for one of those old-fashioned armoires with a hanging bar, but every armoire nowadays is an entertainment center or only has shelves. Annoying.
The only other room in my apartment is the utility room.
Notice how I have a ton of stuff stored in here. It will not fit anywhere else!
Wait, I forgot! There is another closet.
It's in the study and is so small, the only thing I can fit in there is a very small DVD shelf. And a giant framed poster of Britney Spears I can't decide if I want to hang or not.
Well, that's the tour of my place! It's small and quirky, but it's all mine and I love it!
i love your place and it has great light. good find!
